Pineapple sale in Udumalpet is on the rise

Due to the increase in pineapple production in Kerala, there is a huge rush of fruits for sale in areas including Udumalpet.

Tirupur: With the onset of the pineapple season, sales in Udumalpet have picked up. People eagerly buy pineapples.

In Ernakulam district of Kerala, pineapple cultivation is very high. Farmers are cultivating pineapples on several thousand acres of land in and around Vazhakkulam alone.

The geographical indication (GI) has been obtained for the variety Kannarakka grown in the area. Therefore, this variety is exported to various countries from Vazhakulam area.

Other varieties of pineapple are also widely produced. This year, pineapples are being brought and sold on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border to prevent a fall in prices as the production has increased more than usual.

Accordingly, pineapples are brought to Udumalpet through Munnar and the fruit is sold from Rs.30 on the basis of quality and 5 loads of pineapple is brought daily.

Sales in the area are high during the pineapple season. So we plan it and bring the fruits and sell them," the traders said.
