Cauvery Calling Movement members plants 1.5 lakh trees to commemorate Nel Jayaraman Memorial Day

These trees were planted in 36 districts of Tamil Nadu on about 300 acres of land owned by 70 farmers.

Coimbatore: To commemorate Nel Jayaraman Memorial Day, a farmer and consumer activist who dedicated his life to collecting, reviving and preserving traditional paddy varieties, members of the Cauvery Calling Movement planted 1.5 lakh saplings.

These trees were planted in 36 districts of Tamil Nadu on about 300 acres of land owned by 70 farmers.

'Cauvery Calling' is a campaign to support farmers plant 242 crore trees and revitalize Cauvery, and act as a demonstrable model to Save Soil.

State Field Coordinator of Cauvery Calling Movement, Tamilamaran remembered the contribution of Nel Jayaraman saying, "Nel Jayaraman Sir participated and supported Isha in various environment-related events. Whenever he conducted the annual paddy festivals, he began the event by planting saplings.

He collaborated with Isha's 'Project Green Hands' to grow 10,000 timber saplings and distributed them free of cost to the farmers. He had also supported the 'Rally for Rivers,' a movement launched by Sadhguru to revitalize India's rapidly depleting rivers, and participated in the rally at Trichy. We are conducting this plantation drive as a way of thanking him for his generous service."

Isha's Cauvery Calling Movement which was started by Sadhguru aims to enable 5.2 million farmers to plant 2.42 billion trees in the Cauvery River Basin in 12 years.

Tree-based agriculture is pivotal in saving soil as it promotes healthy soil organisms, sequesters water, prevents soil erosion, and reduces the effects of floods and drought.

At the same time, it generates new income sources for the farmers through fruits, fodder, and timber. The movement has planted 4 crore trees in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the last two years. This year in Tamil Nadu alone, 66 lakh trees have been planted against the target of one crore trees.
