Though 10 tonnes of tomatoes were up for auction at the Kinathukadavu market, traders auctioned only 3 tonnes of tomatoes. The remaining tomatoes were dumped in the garbage by farmers.
Coimbatore: Vegetable farming has been the main occupation in and around Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district. The tomato crop has been severely affected due to the incessant rains last week.
Tomatoes harvested despite the heavy rains were brought by the farmers to the Kinathukadavu vegetable market for sale through auction on Wednesday.

Though 10 tonnes of country tomatoes were up for auction at the vegetable market, only three tonnes were auctioned by the traders. It is also said that the traders had not come forward to auction the remaining seven tonnes of tomatoes. Moreover, farmers were shocked when traders auctioned a kg of country-made tomatoes for Rs. 6.

Since the farmers did not get the right price, they dumped the tomatoes brought for sale in the garbage area in the market. Owing to this, tonnes of tomatoes lying in the vegetable market area caused a stench in the area.
