Coimbatore: A three-day state-level refresher training on 'Recent Technologies in Agriculture with Special Focus on Natural Farming' for the scientists of KVKs of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry was organized at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore.

The training is a joint initiative of the Directorate of Extension Education, TNAU, Coimbatore and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) – Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Hyderabad. The inaugural function was presided by Vice Chancellor, Dr. V. Geethalakshmi and the Director of Research, Dr. M. Raveendran, TNAU, Coimbatore.
Dr. P P Murugan, Director of Extension Education, TNAU welcomed the gathering and explained the three-day framework and the expected outcome of the training module to the participants. Further, he indicated that emphasis has to be given for natural farming and each KVK need to prepare a demo model in order to create more awareness among the farming community.
The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. V Geethalakshmi, Vice Chancellor of TNAU, Coimbatore who advised the scientists of KVK to take up research projects with special focus on Tripling Farmer’s Income. "Besides, efforts have to be taken by all the Subject Matter Specialists of KVKs to deliver climate-resilient technologies and agro meteorology advisory services to the farmers in prompt time. Operational research projects which have direct impact on the livelihood of the farmers will always be encouraged by the University," she added.
Dr. M Raveendran, Director of Research, TNAU indicated that 1.84 lakh On-Farm Trials and 12.8 lakh Frontline Demonstrations are conducted every year by 731 KVKs in India. "Specifically, the KVKs of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have bigger roles in enhancing the skills of the farmers to adopt the innovation. Scientists of KVK should utilize the training for updating their knowledge on agricultural technology as TNAU releases 880 crop varieties, 1500 farm technologies and 150 farm machineries so far and more than 80 per cent of the TNAU technologies are adopted by farmers in the field level," he explained.

The inaugural program concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. N Anandaraja, Professor and Head, Training Division, TNAU, Coimbatore.
