Coimbatore: The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed market advisory for Red Chilli.
India is the world's largest producer, consumer and exporter of chillies. China, Thailand, Ethiopia and Indonesia are other major chilli producing countries. Indian chilli is considered to be world famous for two important commercial qualities viz., colourand pungency levels. Around 80 per cent of India's production is consumed within the country. It is the major spice crop occupying about 29 per cent of area under cultivation accounting for nearly 6.94 lakh hectares with a production of 18.66 lakh tonnes of chilli during 2021-22.
The major chilli growing states in India are Andhra Pradesh (49%), Karnataka (15%) Maharashtra (6%) and Tamil Nadu (3%) which constitutes nearly 75 per cent of the total area under chilli. India has exported 5.57 lakh tonnes of chilies in 2021-22 in the form of dried chillies, chilli powder, picked chillies and chilli oleoresin. Indian chilli is mainly exported to Asian countries like China, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
In Tamil Nadu, 0.25 lakh tonnes of chilli was produced in 0.55 lakh hectares during 2020-21. Trade sources reported that insufficient supply of good quality of chillies, which has affected the export demand. Pest and disease infestation led to a sharp drop in the current year yield as compared to the previous year leading to lower production despite acreage increase over last year. In this situation, Price Forecasting Scheme has analyzed the past 15 years of red chilli prices that prevailed at Tirunelveli regulated market for sannam variety. The analysis and traders survey results showed that the farm gate price for sannam variety will rule around Rs. 175-180 per kg at the time of harvesting. Hence, the farmers are advised to take up sowing decision accordingly.
