TNAU Price Forecast for Banana

The expected average farm gate price will be around Rs.22-24 per kg for Poovan, Rs.25-27 for Karpooravalli and Rs.40-44 per kg for Nendhran respectively, in Coimbatore market, during October to December 2022 subject to favourable weather conditions. Hence, farmers are advised to take appropriate selling decisions accordingly.


Coimbatore: The TN-IAM Project-funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore has developed a market advisory for banana.

Banana is cultivated in 9.59 lakhs hectare with a production of 351.31 lakh tonnes in India during 2021-22 according to the Second Advance Estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare. Andhra Pradesh, Maharastra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are the major banana growing states in the country.

In Tamil Nadu, the area under banana cultivation is 1.01 lakh hectare with a production of 39.39 lakh tonnes during 2021-22. Major banana growing districts in Tamil Nadu are Coimbatore, Theni, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. Banana Market Centres in Tamil Nadu are Trichy, Tirunelveli, Cuddalore, Theni and Coimbatore. Among them, Trichy is one of the major centres for supplying banana to various parts of the State.

At present, banana arrivals are mainly from Lalkudi, Karur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Musuri, Theni and Trichy markets. Traders reported that demand for banana may rise mainly due to the festival season. But recent incessant rains have also damaged the crop significantly in Trichy.

The Price Forecasting team has analysed that the prices in the past 19 years of cultivars of Poovan, Karpooravalli and Nendhran bananas of Coimbatore. The results of the analysis and trader survey indicated that the expected average farm gate price will be around Rs.22-24 per kg for Poovan, Rs.25-27 for Karpooravalli and Rs.40-44 per kg for Nendhran respectively, in Coimbatore market, during October to December 2022 subject to favourable weather conditions. Hence, farmers are advised to take appropriate selling decisions accordingly.
