Awareness programme on Kerala wilt disease in Pollachi; Microorganism mixture, COCOCON launched by TNAU

The TNAU and Aliyar Coconut Research Station jointly conducted an awareness programme on management of Coconut Root wilt disease or the Kerala wilt disease affecting coconut plantations.


Coimbatore: An awareness programme to manage the coconut root wilt disease, affecting the plantations at the Pollachi Saraswathi Thiyagaraja College auditorium. The launch of Microorganism mixture, COCOCON of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University also took place.

The Department of Crop Pathology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University jointly with the Aliyar Coconut Research Station held an awareness programme on management of the Coconut Root Wilt Disease or the Kerala Wilt Disease that has been taking over the coconut plantations.



Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Vice Chancellor Dr. N. Kumar , launched the Microorganism mixture, COCOCON and presided over the function. In his keynote address, he highlighted on the effect of the mixture’s contribution on the disease. These microorganisms penetrate through the root to the stem and leaf areas to help the affected trees recover from the disease. He appealed to the farmers to use the COCOCON micro-mixture as recommended in integrated disease management system of TNAU.

In his address, Dr. K. Prabhakar, Director of the Centre for Crop Protection at TNAU, said that coconut immunity should be increased by avoiding the factors that increase the risk of root disease. Joint Director of Agriculture R. Chitradevi, Coimbatore, highlighted the contribution of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in the development of coconut root wilt disease.

And stated that it is important to manage the disease at early symptom Members of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Management Committee A. Krishnasamy Gounder and D. Sethupathi called for increased awareness among farmers on the management of root wilt disease and urged the farmers to make better use of coconut researchers.

Former Member, Management Committee, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, OVR Somasundaram in his special address said that the disease can be accessed biologically by avoiding the participation of chemicals. The farmers, Baladhanadayuthapani of Thappattaikizhavanpudur and Varadarajan of Kaliyappakoundanpudur, expressed their opinions on the effect.

A video on the use of the mixture followed by a video titled Today’s condition on Root Disease and Management was played. The effectiveness of microorganisms was explained with appropriate evidence. Dr. L. Pugazhendi, principal of Coimbatore Horticulture College and Research Institute, interacted with the farmers. The institute’s Fragrance and mountain gardening department, Dr. Venkatesan, and Dr. S. Pranitha, Aliyar Coconut Research Station Professor, also participated in the function. Dr.Karthikeyan, Department of Crop Pathology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University welcomed the gathering. Dr.Nakeeran proposed the vote of thanks. Over 100 coconut farmers from Pollachi and its surroundings participated.
