Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has stated that the prices of coconuts and copra will be stable and the arrivals will be higher in the coming months. TNAU has thus advised farmers to make selling decisions accordingly.

“India stands third in global coconut production behind Indonesia and Philippines. The major states producing coconuts are Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh accounting for 93 percent of the total coconut production of the country. The major importers of coconut from India are United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Iran and Qatar.

Tamil Nadu produced 33.11 lakh tonnes of coconuts from 3.95 lakh hectares in 2019-20. In Tamil Nadu, the major coconut growing districts are Coimbatore, Tirupur, Thanjavur, Dindigul and Kanyakumari. The arrivals of copra to Perundurai market are from Pattukottai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Pollachi, Salem, Kangayam, Mysore (Karnataka) and Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh). The fresh arrivals at present are comparatively higher than in the last year during the same period. The good monsoon has boosted coconut production and arrivals are expected to be higher in the coming months also.

The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed the past 21 years prices for coconut and copra that prevailed at Avalpoonthurai Regulated Market of Erode district and Perundurai Cooperative Marketing Society. As per the results of the analysis, the price of good quality coconut during November-December, 2021 will be around Rs. 25-27 per kg. Good quality copra price will be around Rs. 100-102 per kg. Hence, farmers are advised to make selling decisions accordingly," stated the TNAU press release.
