The expected average farm gate price will be about Rs.15 per kg for Poovan, Rs.25 for Karpuravalli and Rs.32 per kg for Nendhran respectively in Coimbatore market during October-December 2021.
The TN-IAM Project-funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analysed the past 18 years prices of cultivars of Poovan, Karpooravalli and Nendhran banana in Coimbatore.
The results of the analysis and trader survey indicated that the expected average farm gate price will be around Rs.15 per kg for Poovan, Rs.25 for Karpuravalli and Rs.32 per kg for Nendhran respectively, in Coimbatore market during October-December 2021. Hence, farmers are advised to take appropriate selling decisions accordingly.
India is the largest producer of bananas and most of the bananas grown in India are sold in the domestic markets. Even though more than half of the bananas produced in India are Cavendish cultivars, the country is host to a wide diversity of bananas. The major banana growing states are in the North-Eastern and the Southern parts of the country. Tamil Nadu has the largest banana cultivation area followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka. Tamil Nadu also ranks first in production, followed by Maharashtra, but highest productivity is recorded in Maharashtra, followed by Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.
In Tamil Nadu, major banana growing districts are Erode, Coimbatore, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. Majority of Nendran cultivars are grown in Coimbatore, Erode and Kanyakumari districts in order to cater to the needs of Kerala markets. Traditionally, Nendran banana is very important among the people of Kerala since it is an integral part of their diet, including making chips.
At present, banana arrivals are mainly from Lalkudi, Pudukottai, Musuri, Cuddalore and Theni to Trichy market. In Coimbatore market, the Poovan bananas are usually from Pudukottai, Thirukattupalli and Cuddalore. Karpuravalli arrivals are from Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Mettupalayam, while the Nendran arrivals are from Mettupalayam and Kerala. According to trade sources, demand for bananas will now rise due to the festival season.
