Sugarcane cutter-planter developed by ICAR introduced for sugarcane farmers

As per experts, the cutter-planter is expected to save time and increase production

Coimbatore:A 'sugarcane cutter-planter' has been developed and licensed on October 4 to a Coimbatore-based start-up ‘Pishon Technologies.’

The cutter planter has been developed together by ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore (ICAR-SBI) and ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow.

According to Dr. G Hemaprabha, Director of ICAR-SBI, “The cutter-planter would perform seven labour and time intensive operations in a sequence viz., the opening of furrow (a groove made in the soil to plant sugarcane setts and to irrigate), cutting of sugarcane setts (sections of sugarcane stem with one or more buds), dropping of setts in the furrow, applying fertilizers, applying fungicide or insecticide solutions on the setts and soil surface, covering of setts and pressing the soil lightly. This deep furrow sugarcane cutter-planter has been designed and developed for adjustable wide row spacing (4 feet and 5 feet) and capable for planting in heavy clayey soils in the southern states of the country.”

"The machine has been demonstrated successfully in the major sugarcane growing districts of Tamil Nadu viz., Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Erode Districts," she added. The planter will make the labour usage 11 times lesser than the traditional method. The planter reduces the cost of planting to 53 percent. The machine will thus improve overall production efficiency in sugarcane agriculture.
