Coimbatore: Coimbatore District National Food Security Movement Project Director Chitradevi advised farmers to cultivate groundnut for higher yields.
She said, "After plowing the land using a plow, it should be plowed 3 or 4 times with an iron plow. Then 12.5 tons of well decomposed coconut fiber should be placed. Mix 4 g of Trichoderma viride with one kg of seeds. Also bio-fertilizers should be mixed with rice porridge for seed treatment. Sow 125 kg of seed per hectare. For varieties with large seeds, an additional 15 per cent of the seed size is required. Plant should be spaced with 10 cm space between plants and bed spacing of 30 cm.
She added, "If weedicides are not used, weed on the 20th and 40th day after sowing. On the 3rd day after sowing, spray 200 kg / hectares of ‘Oxyflorben’ before germination. Set the beds at 10 m to 20 m distance depending on the availability of water, landslides and soil conditions. In varieties with large nuts, stunted growth of pods is a major risk. To avoid this, mix and spray the nutrients. There is no need to water before harvest if there is sufficient moisture in the soil. Higher yields can be obtained with such technologies."
