Farmers, students and staff members were highlighted upon the benefits of Millets and were given cultivation ideas
Coimbatore: Indian Council of Agricultural Research organized an online curtain-raising programme on the 17th with the arrival of International Year of Millets 2023.

The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar inaugurated the online meet and threw light on the programs and themes for the Internal Year of Millets. The Minister stated that the nation aims to enhance production, entrepreneurial opportunities, increase health and nutritional value, processing and awareness creation.
Later Dr.A.S.Krishnamoorthy, Registrar TNAU, in his presidential address, recollecting the ancient food habits involving the millets, urged that there is a need for the inclusion of millet-based food in the diet. He also highlighted the achievements of the country with regard to food safety.
R.Chitradevi, Joint Director of Agriculture Coimbatore spoke on the quality seeds, hybrids, fertilizer management, pest, and disease management that helps increase productivity.
Special lectures on Millet-based value addition and the benefits of inclusion of such food in the diet was provided by Dr. P. Rajkumar, Professor & Head, Dept. of Food Process Engineering, TNAU, Coimbatore, Dr.A.Subramanian, Professor (PB&G) and Dr. Umesh Kanna, Professor (Forestry).

As part of the program, seeds were distributed to the students and farmers, and saplings were planted. Dr. M.Jawaharlal, Director of Extension Education, TNAU welcomed the gathering and stressed the importance and usage of millets in our daily life. Dr. Ravi Kumar, Theodore, Professor & Head, Training Division, TNAU, Coimbatore proposed a vote of thanks.
