Coimbatore: As many as 50 farmers participated in the day-long programme on ‘Integrated Weed Management’ hosted by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on August 27.
Coimbatore: As many as 50 farmers participated in the day-long programme on ‘Integrated Weed Management’ hosted by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on August 27.
The All India Coordinated Research Project on Weed Management, Department of Agronomy, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) was assigned with the task of organising the hands-on training programme. Scheduled caste farmers under Scheduled Caste Sub Plan of Indian Council of Agricultural Research during 2021-22 participated in the programme. Chiththalampudur, Srivilliputhur Taluk was the venue selected for the programme.

Participating farmers were trained on herbicidal weed management in the cropped and non-cropped areas and were also exposed to different kinds of herbicides.
The programme was presided over by Dr. C. R. Chinnamuthu, Professor and Head, Department of Agronomy who delivered an address on herbicidal weed management to participating farmers and educated the farmers with inputs. He highlighted about herbicides that are recommended for different crops and their safe usage. In particular, he explained in detail about herbicidal weed management for maize and clarified the farmer’s queries.
L Muthulakshmi, Assistant Director of Agriculture and Dr. Veeraputhiran, Associate Professor and Head, Cotton Research Station Srivilliputhur delivered a special address on weed management for cotton crop. Dr. P Murali Arthanari, Associate Professor and Principal Investigator; AICRP Weed Management, explained the selection, time of application and method of application of herbicides for field crops. The ill-effects of Parthenium and its management were also explained and demonstrated the methods of spraying of herbicides for cropped and non-cropped areas. Dr. Thiagu, Assistant Professor (Plant Breeding) concluded the programme with a vote of thanks.
