Coimbatore: Coimbatore District Agriculture Project Director Chitradevi said that farmers can get more profit by cultivating rye this season.
She said, "Rye is used for cultivation in various varieties like grafting. 5 kg seed per acre is required and the seed size varies depending on the sowing method. Sal sowing is widely practiced and seed treatment should be done 24 hours before sowing at the rate of 6 g of Metalax with one kg of seed."
She added, "Row spacing should be 45 cm and row to plant spacing should be 15 cm. In rainfed lands 12.5 tonnes (per hectare), 70 kg N, 20 kg N should be applied at the base. At the time of weeding in the 2nd week after sowing of rye, the crop should be spaced 15 cm apart. It must be watered once in 7 to 10 days.
Spray 5% neem juice to control young flies in integrated crop disease and pest control systems. The leaves turn yellow and give a dry appearance. The grains are hard and then the rays have to be harvested separately. Farmers can get good profit if they cultivate rye in some of these methods."
