The Department of Agriculture and Agrarian Welfare has set a target to convert barren lands into arable lands under the National Agricultural Development Plan to increase the area under crop cultivation in Coimbatore district by 2021-2022.
Coimbatore: The Department of Agriculture and Agrarian Welfare has set a target to convert barren lands into arable lands under the National Agricultural Development Plan to increase the area under crop cultivation in Coimbatore district by 2021-2022. A total of 490 hectares for Coimbatore district has been targeted for 400 hectares for cereals and 90 hectares for pulses and has been distributed to all Regional Agricultural Extension Centers.
Currently the selection process for the Regional Board Beneficiaries of Agriculture Officers is underway. It is planned to convert a minimum of 10 hectares of barren land in a village into arable land for crop cultivation on barren land. In addition, the hired machinery required for clearing the bushes and leveling the land in the selected fallow land will be provided by the Department of Agricultural Engineering and the required seeds, bio-fertilizers and crop protection drugs will be provided at subsidized rates by the Department of Agriculture.
Accordingly, a subsidy of 50 per cent or Rs. 13,400 per hectare will be given to the beneficiary in a bank account. Joint Director of Agriculture Chitradevi farmers can obtain the certificate of their land citta, Adangal and barren land certification from the Grama Niladhari and present it at the office of the nearest Regional Assistant Director of Agriculture.
