In Tamil Nadu, paddy cultivation is in full swing at present. With the cultivation of maize, cotton, cereals, oilseeds and vegetable crops, research work has been on with a view to ensuring seed quality.
In all the districts, 17,848 surveys were made and 9,779 seed samples were taken from various crops put up for sale. These were sent for analysis. According to the study, 563 metric tonnes of seeds worth Rs 4.28 crore have been banned from sale.
Subbaiah, Director, Seed Certification and Organic Certification, said, “Action is being taken against all manufacturers and sellers of substandard seeds. Seed manufacturers should send those to the distributors without relevant sales list and analysis results. Farmers should make purchases only at licensed stations. The sales list of purchases should be kept till the end of the harvest season."
