Coimbatore: Pollachi is known as the Coconut City. The coconuts in the surrounding villages of Pollachi are transported for sale to other districts and states.

Every year during the summer months, in the months of February, March, April and May, most of the tender coconut is sent for sale to the other districts and states.

In the year 2020, due to the increase in the production of tender coconut, till last January, they were purchased from Rs. 17 to a maximum of Rs. 20. Thereafter the demand for tender coconut increased due to the impact of the summer sun. Last April, the wholesale price was as high as Rs. 28.

Since the end of April, the tender coconut harvest has been declining for several weeks due to the drought. The yield of tender coconut is said to be low at present. In addition, the harvested tender coconut is immediately sent abroad causing high scarcity. Traders said now tender coconut is currently being purchased at the farms for up to Rs 30 and it is sold in retail at Rs 40 to Rs 45.
