More than fifty tribal farmers actively participated in each training and learnt about the scope, importance and health benefits of Pearl millet crop along with its improved production practices for higher productivity.
Coimbatore: Department of Millets, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore organized four training programmes on “Improved production technologies and value addition in Pearl millet†under Scheduled Tribe Component of All India Coordinated Research Project on Pearl millet.

The trainings were conducted at Kuliyada on 5th February 2021, at Pudukad villages of ThalavadiBlock, Erode District on 18th February 2021, at Kethaikaadu 16th February 2021 and Maanaar on 23rd February 2021 in the villages of Karamadai, Coimbatore District.

The training was organized with the objective of motivating the tribal community towards the popularization of Pearl millet in their locality.
Dr R Ravikesavan, Professor and Head, Department of Millets presided over the training and addressed the role of nutri-cereals in food and nutritional security. The ADAs of the concerned Blocks narrated about the schemes available for Tribal welfare under Government of Tamil Nadu. Dr K Iyanar, Associate Professor (PBG) explained the high yielding Pearl millet varieties and hybrids developed from TNAU.
Dr R Karthikeyan, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) emphasized about the improved agronomic practices for getting higher yields while Dr I Johnson, Assistant Professor (Plant Pathology) detailed about the disease and pest management in Pearl millet.
Information on value addition and preparation of value added products in Pearl millet were also shared to the participants during the training. Also during the programme, inputs were distributed to the targeted beneficiaries and an exhibition showcasing the latest varieties and hybrids, value added products and posters on advanced technologies in Pearl millet were displayed for better understanding.
