National Science Day 2021 celebration on the theme was organized by the Centre for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in TNAU, Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Members of the Centre for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in TNAU, Coimbatore yesterday celebrated the National Science Day 2021 under the theme 'Future of Science, Technology and Innovation: Impacts on Education, Skills and Work’.
Dr M Raveendran, Professor and Head, Department of Plant Biotechnology welcomed the gathering. Which was followed by the introductory remarks about National Science Day presented by Dr S Mohankumar, Director (CPMB&B), TNAU, Coimbatore.
In his introductory remarks, Dr S Mohan Kumar narrated the origin of the National Science Day commemorating the ‘Discovery of Raman Effect’ from the year 1987. He then mentioned that National science day is conducted to motivate the young minds through popular lectures and competitions.
In his presidential address, Prof. N Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University mentioned the impacts of Science, Technology and Innovation on Education, Skills and Work.
He further explained that National Education Policy will provide flexibility in learning through Mass Open Online courses offered by UGC. He also mentioned that TNAU is going to offer one month crash courses for skill development in agricultural technology.
LaterProf. N Kumar emphasized the need for updating global innovation for uplifting the farmers. He stated that " Now, India ranks 48th in Global Innovation Index, which needs to move in front in coming years. Scientific innovation with policy support always helps to reach the goal in agriculture. "
Another lecture was given by Dr Krishna on the future of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Jagadish, Associate Professor, Kansas State University, USA and Adjunct professor at TNAU. He briefed on the advancement in sensor based technologies in agriculture.The relevance of mechanization in small land holding in India was emphasized.
Later, R Selvam, IAS, Executive Director, Council for Leather Exports, Chennai addressed the gathering. He provided insight on the significance of innovative technology on the future economy. He further emphasized the promotion of artificial intelligence and drone technologies in Indian context.
Finally, Dr R Gnanam, Professor and Head, Department of Plant Biotechnology, CPMB & B proposed the vote of thanks.
Around 70 participants from 10 schools in and around Coimbatore participated in four different competitions held yesterday in connection with National Science Day - 2021 celebrations. Prizes were distributed for the winners of various competitions.
