Tirupur: Thirumoorthy Dam is located near the Udumalaipet in district of Tirupur. Water from the Thirumoorthy Dam is being opened for irrigation purposes. Locals from Kangeyam have continuously been complaining about the water supply to Vellaikovil branch which is very limited.

Locals complain that PWD officials have not taken any actions against the amount of water which is being stolen by certain groups. As a protest, the people of that area are now on a hunger strike till death.

Over 3.77 lakh acres lands belong to the PAP irrigation project. Even after being divided into four zones before, 48 thousands acres of fields in Kangeyam always have a shortage of water supply.

Even after a variety of protests undertaken by the public of Kangeyam and Collector's orders, officials still ignore their livelihood and have continued to turn a blind eye towards the farmer's of the village.

Requesting for adequate water supply and immediate actions against officers who failed to do their duty, over 1000 members including farmers from Kangeyam, Vellaikovil, Olappalayam and Mayilrangam along with women and common public are now on a hunger strike till death.

As a support to this protest, over 3000 shops and other revenue centers in the city areas of Kangeyam and Vellaikovil have planned to remain shut.
