TNAU spearheads Innovative Technologies and Advanced Researches, praised the Vice-Chairman, State Development Policy Council
Coimbatore: To monitor and evaluate the Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiative Projects (TANII) funded with a budget of Rs.50 crores by Government of Tamil Nadu, the former Finance Minister and presently the Vice-Chairman, SDPC, Thiru. C. Ponnaiyan, visited Tamil Nadu Agricultural University on 11.01.2021.Dr. N. Kumar, the Vice-Chancellor, TNAU greeted the Vice-Chairman, during his one day visit and showed the advanced research laboratories and the ongoing activities of TANII.
As a part of the visit, the Nano Labs, Post harvest Technology Centre, the state-of–the-art insect museum, the coconut tissue culture lab and the organic bio input exhibition, Pellet form of fodder production, synergistic rapid composting technology through automation, Ultra high density plantation in Mango, Bamboo oxygen park, Plant bioactive molecule extract lab for Gymnema, newly face lifted botanical garden, the Rhizotron lab, ‘first of its kind in Asia’ for root research andMillet Breeding Station have been witnessed by the Vice-Chairman. He appreciated the scientists for the progressive growth of TNAU under research cum innovation.

Outcomes from thefunded projects resulting in innovationsincluding natural dye extraction from Bixa Orellana,release of advanced climate resilient rice varieties viz., ADT 53 and ADT 54,establishment of tree models for alfisol tracts, integrated seed production hub, fruit fly trapping technology, revitalization of millets and value addition, palmyrah and value addition, introduction of optimal mechanization, grafting brinjal technology, drudgery reducing farm implements for women were showcased.
Efforts taken to appraise the farmers through frontline demonstrations, innumerable trainings for inducing entrepreneurial capacity and skill acquisition were explained by the Vice- Chancellor. During the past five years, the TANII schemes have brought out significant developments, due to which area expansion, yield increase, income augmentation and employment opportunities, the potential social and economic impact have been achieved.


Vice- Chairman reiterated to give impetus for research productivity and to align with private partners for quality research. He insisted that Agricultural policy may be formulated based on the expertise of Agricultural scientists. Tamil Nadu Government by and large exhorted the Agricultural Scientists to play a key role for Policy formulations, he added. As part of the visit, the University officers and scientists accompanied the Vice-Chairman.
