Tons of Onions ruined in the rains without proper storage facility at the MGR market - Union head Rajendran!

Sellers upset as tons of onions were spoilt due to the recent rains in the city.

Coimbatore: Over 600 to 1000 tons of big onions arrive at the MGR market in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore everyday. These big onions which arrive from different states are then sorted and sent to other districts.

However without proper storage space tons of onions are now spoilt post the recent showers in the district. Coimbatore district onion sellers union head Rajendran who addressed the press regarding this issue said that the market was operating at the bus stand due to Covid-19 pandemic. He then said that since the unlock of lockdown the MGR market is now operating in full force.

Rajendran also said that there is a huge lack of market space and that is the reason behind the onions being damaged due to the rains.

He also said that the market is poorly maintained and there is actually no space for sellers to operate. Onion sellers union head Rajendran then requested the corporation officials to take immediate action to develop the MGR market in a way which will help the onion sellers.
