Coimbatore: For a 24-hour period ending at 5:30 AM this morning, Coimbatore received a record rainfall of 113-mm (112.8-mm according to a report published by the Disaster Management team) for a 24-hour period.
Throwing light on this, Santhosh Krishnan, popularly known as the Coimbatore Weatherman says “For official reading purposes, the rainfall recorded at Coimbatore International Airport region is taken as the city’s overall rainfall reading. "This is the highlight rainfall that the city has received for a 24-hour period and also, this is the highest amount of rainfall recorded for the month of January."
He added that in the past, the highest amount of rainfall that the city received for a 24-hour period was in the year 1985. Coimbatore received 33.4-mm rainfall back then. Also, it was in the same year that the textile city received a maximum amount of rainfall during the month of January.
The city received a total amount of 64-mm of rainfall in January in the same year. “Approximate average amount of rainfall that Coimbatore receives in January is 20-mm.†Santhosh told us.
Commenting on what caused heavy downpours in during the 24-hour period, he tells us that the upper air cyclone circulation over the South East Arabian Sea and the Western disturbances over North India have resulted in the more than normal rainfall.
"Brace for rainy days until the harvest festival. The entire Tamil Nadu is expected to receive showers for the next few days till the 12th or 13th of January. However, Pongal will be dry.†Santhosh predicts. While the coastal regions can expect rainfall during the day, the Kongu belt, including Coimbatore will receive showers post noon. Wind speed is normal and is not a cause of concern.
While few are celebrating the rainfall which is 10 times more than normal, farmers especially those who have cultivated the paddy and maize crops are a worried lot, as the rain has damaged the crop which were ready to be harvested.
