Plantation Workers in Valparai euphoric over increase in coffee yield!

This year the coffee cherries have ripped in large quantities and are ready to be harvested.

Coimbatore: Since 1862 the period of British in India, Coffee has been a major crop across Valparai, Coimbatore. Over thousands of families were involved in the production of coffee.

However with a lot of infection there was a continuous depletion in the production of coffee. Hence the estates which were growing coffee switched into growing tea. Valparai which was once a land filled with coffee estates now only has 10,000 hectares of lands as coffee estates.

Coffee is now being produced in an estate at Varatuparai near Valparai. This year the coffee cherries have ripped in large quantities and are ready to be harvested.

Coffee cherries which can be harvested only once in a year, are collected from the plants and then stored in Theni district in Tamilnadu and Bengaluru district in Karnataka.

After the coffee cherries are cleaned the coffee beans will be dried and processed ready to be exported to countries like Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and America.

Labourers who are involved in harvesting the coffee cherries are ecstatic due to the increase in production of coffee cherries which will in turn provide jobs to many of them.
