Shallot Prices are distorted by Pest and Diseases: TNAU
Coimbatore: The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed the past 10 year historical prices that prevailed in Dindigul Market and conducted market survey in the major shallot producing districts of Tamil Nadu.
As per the survey, the farm gate prices of good quality small onion would be prevailing above Rs.50/kg in the coming months. It is expected that the shallot price will further increase until the new harvest commences from March’21.
Incessant rain and conducive climate triggered the pest and disease attack on small onion in the major tracts of Perambalur, Thuraiyur and Kallakurichi area. Reduced yield and poor quality bulbs triggered the price of better quality shallots during coming season. As per the trade sources, roughly 9000 ha of crop area is affected by this pest-disease complex. To prevent this situation in the coming seasons, farmers are advised to take up necessary preventative measures to save the crop.
In India, small onion is mainly grown in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odissa. The major small onion growingdistricts in Tamil Nadu are Perambalur, Trichy, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Kallakurichi and Namakkal.
Small onion is largely cultivated in three main seasons namely, Vaigasi, Purattasi and Thai pattam. To some extent, it is also cultivated during Karthigai pattam so that it is made available in the markets throughout the year. The Purattasi and Karthigai pattam crop are severely affected by pest and diseases. Hence, markets now receive poor quality of shallots with reduced marketable surplus from the farmers.
