Coimbatore: Small onion prices continue to increase in Pollachi Gandhi Market and are sold at Rs 90 to Rs 100 per kg.

Small onions are brought daily to the onion market in Pollachi from various districts of Tamil Nadu and the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It is usually bought by traders from the surrounding rural areas and from Coimbatore, Pollachi and Kerala.



The supply of shallots to the market was moderate till last March and its price was as low as Rs. 35 to Rs. 40. Thereafter, due to continuous rains, the supply of small onions to the market from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh was very low. Due to this, the price of small onions in Pollachi market has seen a steep increase in price.

For the past one month, the price of small onions has been hovering between Rs 90 per kg and a maximum of Rs 120 per kg. As of yesterday, the wholesale price of shallots was around Rs. 90 per kg. Traders said the retail price was as high as Rs 100 per kg.
