Coimbatore: TNAU conducts Nematode Awareness Campaign for Tribal Farmers near Pollachi
Coimbatore: An awareness campaign to tribal farmers on nematode problems in crop plants and its management was conducted on 30.09.2020 at Thammampatti village of Anamalai forest range, Pollachi taluk, Coimbatore district.
The beneficiaries belong to Malasar tribes who are vegetable growers and farm labourers. The campaign was started with a welcome address and introductory remarks by Dr. P. Kalaiarasan, Asst. Professor (Nem). He explained the damage and yield loss caused by nematode infestation in different crops.
The role of AICRP (N), ICAR, New Delhi in funding was enlightened by Dr. N. Swarnakumari, Asst. Professor (Nem). She also demonstrated the application of bioagents for the management of nematodes. Farm inputs such as bioagents and tools like crowbars, spades, pickaxes and bill hooks were distributed to the farmers along with training kit.
The programme was concluded with vote of thanks by Mr. J. Subasakthi Kumar, a progressive farmer of Vettaikaranpudur, Pollachi.
About 100 tribal farmers benefitted through this campaign. The fund provided by AICRP (N) ICAR, New Delhi and support given by Dr. A. Shanthi, Professor and Head, Department of Nematology, TNAU, Coimbatore was also acknowledged at the end of the programme.
