Coimbatore: TNAU releases price forecast for Coconut and Copra. The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed the past 10 years prices for coconut and copra that prevailed at the Erode Avalpoondurai Regulated Market and market the survey conducted at Perundurai Cooperative Marketing Society.

As per the results of the analysis, the price of good quality coconut during the August-September, 2020 period will be Rs. 14-15 per nut. Good quality copra price will rule around Rs. 90-95 per kg. Hence, farmers are advised to take selling decisions accordingly.

According to the Second Advance Estimates of the National Horticultural Board (2019-20), the area under coconut is 21.53 lakh hectares with a production of 146.95 lakh tonnes of nuts. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh together contribute nearly 91 percent of the total coconut production in India.

Tamil Nadu has produced 37.01 lakh tonnes of coconuts from the cultivable area of 4.37 lakh hectares in 2019-20. In our state, coconut is mainly cultivated in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Thanjavur, Dindigul and Kanyakumari districts. According to the trade sources, during this season, the production of coconut in major producing districts are low when compared to the previous season.

Arrivals of copra to Perundurai market are from in and around Erode district mainly due to transport restrictions. COVID-19 impact leaves imprints on the coconut market as demand remained low due to partial functioning of hotels, hostels and functions, but panic buying firmed up the retail prices.
