Coimbatore: According to the projections of the International Grains Council (IGC), maize production in India during 2020-21 will be 28.9 million tonnes. Good quality maize in Tamil Nadu during the harvest of October 2020 to November 2020 will be Rs.1,450 to Rs.1,550 per quintal, if the current trend prevails in the market.
As per the projections of the International Grains Council (IGC), maize production in India during 2020-21 will be 28.9 million tonnes which is very close to the previous year forecast of 29 million tonnes. About 20 lakh tonnes of maize is estimated to be imported during 2020-21. In India, 51 per cent of the maize is used as feed, 24 per cent as food and 17 per cent in industry and rest in others. The leading maize producing states in the country are Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Export of maize from India has been reduced to 0.4 million tonnes in 2019-20 from 4 million tonnes in 2010-11. Until 2013-14, India remained a major exporter of maize, whereas from 2015-16, it became an importer because of the rising domestic demand for maize in the feed and industry sector. Till the end of December 2019, maize price ruled above Rs.2,000 per quintal because fall armyworm affected maize crop. Good Rabi arrivals from major growing States, imports from Ukraine, Myanmar and Russia and the impact created by COVID- 19 on the poultry sector has reduced the demand for domestic maize. So, the maize price started declining and it is currently ruled around Rs.1,400-1,450 per quintal in Udumalpet regulated market.
The major maize growing districts of Tamil Nadu are Salem, Viluppuram, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Namakkal and Virudhunagar. At present arrivals from Bihar to Tamil Nadu markets will prevail till the end of July but, Tamil Nadu farmers have stored the Thai Pattam maize in anticipation of better prices.
The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed the past 19 years' maizee prices that prevailed in Udumalpet Regulated Market. Per the analysis and market survey, the farm gate price of good quality maize in Tamil Nadu during the harvest of Aadi Pattam (October’20 to November’20)will be Rs.1,450 to 1, 550 per quintal, if the current trend prevails in the market. Hence, farmers are advised to take up appropriate sowing decisions.
