Coimbatore: The TNAU has announced the price forecast for bananas. The expected average farm gate price would be Rs.18-20 per kg for poovan, Rs. 20-22 for karpooravalli and Rs. 32-35 nendhran, respectively during August 2020 across the State.

The major banana growing states in India are Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Assam. The major banana growing districts in TN are Thoothukudi, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Karur, Erode and Kanyakumari.
Trichy has been a major centre for the distribution of bananas to various markets such as Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram and Perambalur within Tamil Nadu.
At Present, banana arrivals to Trichy market are mainly from Pudukottai,Thanjavur, Theni and also from Andhra Pradesh. Market arrivals of poovan bananas to Coimbatore market are usually from Pudukottai, Thirukattupalli and Cuddalore. Karpooravalli arrives from Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Mettupalayam. Nendran arrivals are from Mettupalayam and Kerala.
As of now, due to closure of hotels, student hostels and restricted participation in functions due to COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for bananas has declined significantly.
The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analysed the past 10-year prices of poovan, karpooravalli and nendran varieties.
The results of analysis and trader survey indicated that the expected average farm gate price would be Rs.18-20 per kg for poovan, Rs. 20-22 for karpooravalli and Rs. 32-35 kg for Nendhran respectively during August 2020 across the State.
Subsequent price oscillation will be subject to monsoon rain and relaxation of COVID-19 lockdown for functions and ceremonies. Hence, farmers are advised to take appropriate selling decisions accordingly.
