Groundnut is one of the major oilseed crops grown in India and also an important-export commodity. Though groundnut is cultivated in different seasons, nearly 80 per cent of the annual acreage and production comes from the kharif crop. According to the first advance estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, groundnut production in India during 2019-20 kharif was 63.11 lakh tonnes. India exported groundnut to the tune of 6.64 lakh tonnes with the value of Rs.5,096.39 crore during 2019-20 mainly to Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines.
The major growing states are Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. During kharif 2020, groundnut cultivation has surged to 6.5 lakh hectares and 6.7 lakh hectares, respectively, in Gujarat and Rajasthan, which is higher to the same in the last year. If COVID 19 is not resolved soon, exports may dip and would lead to huge glut in domestic markets. Per the first advance estimates in Tamil Nadu, kharif groundnut production was 4.29 lakh tonnes during 2018-19. Major groundnut cultivation districts are Tiruvannamalai, Viluppuram, Vellore, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur and Cuddalore. In most of these districts, groundnut is sown in the July-August (Aadipattam) and January-February (Thai pattam) periods.
TN-IAMP Price Forecasting Scheme implemented at the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (CARDS), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) analyzed the past 12-year historical prices prevailing at Tindivanam Regulated Market for groundnut. As per the results of the time series analysis and market survey, the farm gate price of good quality groundnut during harvest (August to September) would be around Rs.60-62 per kg. If the usual exports do not happen, the price is likely to decline further. Hence, farmers have been advised to take sowing decisions accordingly.
Globally, India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of sesame. The major states producing sesame are West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, representing more than 88 per cent of total country’s production. According to the first advance estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, sesame production in India during 2019-20 kharif was 6.86 lakh tonnes, which is 9 per cent lesser than the previous year. Estimated production for sesame in Gujarat increased twofold from 11,650 tonnes in 2018-19 to 24,490 tonnes in 2019-20 due to increase in area and also in productivity. India exported 2.32 lakh tonnes with the value of Rs.3,067 crores during 2019-20. The top export destinations are the USA, South Korea, Vietnam, Russia and Netherlands.
The major sesame growing districts in Tamil Nadu are Viluppuram, Erode, Thanjavur, Karur, Salem, and Cuddalore. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the export demand for sesame has gone down and the yields have been diverted to Southern Indian states for crushing. Reduced export demand and good arrivals from other major growing states like West Bengal and Karnataka could result in price reduction in the months to come.
The TN-IAMP Price Forecasting Scheme implemented at the Centre for Agriculture analyzed the historical prices of sesame for the past 17 years at Sivagiri Regulated Market in Erode district. Per the results of the time series analysis, the farm gate price of good quality sesame during the August-September, 2020 period would be around Rs.80-85 /- kg. Hence, the farmers have been advised to take appropriate sowing decisions.
