Coimbatore: The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed the past 20-year historical prices in Dindigul Market for shallots.
As per the results of the time series analysis, the farm gate prices of good quality shallots till end of August would be around Rs. 36-38/kg and subsequent price fluctuation would be there based on arrivals from Karnataka. Hence, the farmers are advised to take selling decisions accordingly.
Tamil Nadu is the major producer and consumer of shallots in India. The small onion is traditionally grown in Dindigul, Tirupur, Perambalur, Trichy, Namakkal, Theni and Madurai districts of Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, the crops are mainly cultivated in three seasons, i.e., Thai, Vaigasi and Purattasi and are stored and available in the market throughout the year.
Market arrivals have started from Dharapuram, Udumalpet and Pollachi within the state and also from Mysore and Kollegal areas of Karnataka. Because of COVID’ 19 crisis, exports of the crops are facing a lull in South East Asian countries. Arrivals from Karnataka are expected to be normal and around late-June, arrivals from Mysore and Chamarajpet will hit Tamil Nadu markets. At present, the prevailing market price is Rs.32-35 per kg and the same price trend is expected to continue for the coming days as per trade sources.
