Coimbatore: The Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Biotechnology students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore convene a national level technical symposium titled Bioconcorrenza’ 2020 and PG seminar from 13.03.2020 to 14.03.2020.
Coimbatore: The Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Biotechnology students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore convene a national level technical symposium titled Bioconcorrenza’ 2020 and PG seminar from 13.03.2020 to 14.03.2020.

This is the fifteenth edition which has been organized by the Centre for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (CPMB&B) at TNAU under the leadership of Dr. S. Mohankumar, Director (CPMB&B). He narrated the importance of conducting this event as an annual affair only to inculcate the student's organization skills, exposure and networking ability with the outside scientific community.

Prof. N. Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU presided the inaugural function and stressed the proactive role of the present generation students in research and inturn to contribute towards societal development.
Felicitations were offered by various university officers of TNAU. Dr. M. Kalyanasundaram, Dean (Agriculture) emphasized the need for adopting tomorrows technology for addressing the current challenges in today’s agriculture.
Dr. J. S. Kennedy, Dean (SPGS), highlighted the importance of innovations as a driver of translational research, Dr. K. Soorianathasundaram, Controller of Examinations wanted the students to rise up and explore opportunities in the sphere of agriculture and allied disciplines.
Earlier third-year student representatives R. Pavithra, B. Tech (Biotechnology) welcomed the gathering and N. Sivasankara Bharathi, B.Tech (Bioinformatics) proposed a vote of thanks. The inaugural session concluded with the release of Bioconcorrenza 2020 souvenir.
Technical Sessions (13.03.2020 – 14.03.2020)
The following invited lectures were delivered as a part of the technical session of the workshop.
Professor R. Sowdhamini, NCBS, Bengaluru presented the genome sequencing of medicinally important plants viz., Thulasi, Moringa and Perandai. Her work was focused on understanding the genes regulating the synthesis of anticancerous agents such as ursolic acid and taxol.
Dr. M.K. Reddy, Group leader, ICGEB, New Delhi elaborated on the genome editing technology and its usefulness in crop improvement. His talk holds promises for improving rice for increased yield and nutritional traits.
Dr. Boney Kurikose, Lead Scientist, Agri Genome Pvt. Ltd., Cochin presented his work on curry leaf genome sequencing. Also, their work on the characterization of the genes that make the cobra venom might pave for large scale production of anti-venom through biotechnology.
Dr. V. Rajesh Babu, MS MCh, President, IMA Coimbatore educated the audience on the need for organ donation. Besides the guest lectures, poster and oral presentations by the students were focused on the recent biotechnological interventions in agriculture.
On day two, quiz competition and hands-on session on the latest biotechnological and bioinformatics methods were held for the participants, a total of 32 students enrolled for the above programs. Dr. Fathima Benazir, CEO, Azooka Life Sciences, Bengaluru narrated her journey as an entrepreneur into the field of biotechnology and wished the aspiring students to be passionate enough rather being transactional.
Students of undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty members of various colleges participated in the event.

Dr. N. Kumaravadivel, Professor and Head, Dept. Plant Molecular Biology & Bioinformatics presented the Bioconcorrenza 2020 report, Dr. S. Mohankumar, Director (CPMB&B) offered the felicitation address.

Dr. A.S. Krishnamoorthy, Registrar, TNAU delivered the valedictory address and wanted the students to imbibe the entrepreneurial mindset right early in their career. As an example, he highlighted the commercial potential that existed among the largely diverse microbial community which remains largely underexploited.
Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions which were held on the eve of Bioconcorrenza, Dr. T. Raguchander, Dean (Student Welfare) distributed the prizes to the students.
Earlier third-year students S. Mohammed Suhail, B. Tech (Bioinformatics) welcomed the gathering and finally C. Abikkumar, B. Tech (Biotechnology) proposed a vote of thanks for the concluding session.
