Agro Forestry

Agro forestry in India is gaining significant attention and attraction across the country, due to its role in providing wood and wood products for industrial and domestic utility. However, Agro forestry has witnessed several constraints, from production to consumption system, due to lack of strong industrial and domestic utility.

The facilitation of felling and transportation, by wood based industries attracts farmers towards tree crop cultivation. These developments have witnessed the establishment of over one lakh industrial Agro forestry plantation for pulp, paper, plywood, timber, matchsticks and other related industries.

Timber Contract Farming programme

To strengthen these activities and create more opportunities for easy marketing of farm grown products, Forest College and Research Institute, TNAU, Mettupalayam will launch Timber Contract Farming programme with Madurai+based timber firm, Suresh Mass Marketing Private Limited.

The industry plans to grow Agro forestry by utilizing high yielding clones developed by TNAU.

The National Agro Forestry Policy 2014, emphasises the need for institutions to resolve the issues in Agroforestry.
