Small onion is one of the most important kitchen staples in Southern India. India ranks second next to China by contributing 18% of the total World production. According to the Third Advance Estimates (2018-19) of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the area and production of small onion in Tamil Nadu is estimated to be 0.28 lakh hectares and 3.01 lakh tonnes respectively. Small onion is mainly grown in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odissa. Karnataka is the major competitor for Tamil Nadu in cultivation and trade of small onion.
In Tamil Nadu, small onion is cultivated more than 80 per cent of the total onion area and the remaining area is under Bellary onion. Dindigul, Tirupur, Perambalur, Trichy and Namakkal are the major small onion producing districts in Tamil Nadu.
According to a trade source, monsoon and associated crop failure in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh has reduced the arrivals of onion to Tamil Nadu market. Both July and October sown crops in Tamil Nadu are affected due to pest and diseases, which are further aggravated by the extended monsoon. Hence, the price of small onion increased in the recent period. The price may fall during March’2020 after the harvest of the current crop as well as arrivals from Karnataka.
