TNAU releases price forecast for Banana for Jan-Feb; Poovan to be sold at Rs. 24 per kg

Coimbatore: The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analysed the past 10 years prices of cultivars of Poovan, Karpooravalli and Nendhran banana of Coimbatore.


Coimbatore: The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analysed the past 10 years prices of cultivars of Poovan, Karpooravalli and Nendhran banana of Coimbatore. 

The results of analysis and trader survey indicated that the expected average farm gate price will be around Rs. 24 per kg for Poovan, Rs.32 for Karpuravalli and Rs.35 per kg for Nendhran respectively, in Coimbatore market during February - March 2020. The decline in banana price is due to increase in area under cultivation in the recent years. 

Hence, farmers are advised to take appropriate selling decision accordingly, a release noted. 

Arrivals of Poovan banana to Coimbatore market is predominantly from Pudukottai, Thirukattupalli and Cuddalore. Karpuravalli arrivals are from Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Mettupalayam. And, Nendran arrivals are from Mettupalayam and Kerala.

BANANA CULTIVATION 

The area under banana in India is 8.74 lakh hectares with a production of 300.06 lakh tonnes according to the First Advance Estimates of National Horticulture Board (2018-19). The leading states in the country for banana cultivation are Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra. And, the major banana growing districts of Tamil Nadu are Coimbatore, Theni, Trichy, Karur, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari.
