Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) has predicted that price of tomato, brinjal will remain low due to high yield, whereas price of Lady's Finger will remain favorable for the farmers during January and February.
In a press note, TNAU has stated that more than adequate rainfall in most parts of Tamil Nadu has resulted in good yield of vegetables. Especially, the north east monsoon has brought cheers to the farmers as it has adequately recharged the ground water table to withstand the upcoming drought during summer.
However, excessive yield of Tomato and Brinjal has resulted in sharp fall of prices, the release said.
Tomato
In Tamil Nadu, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruppur, Theni and Dindigul districts are the major cultivation pockets for tomato. During crisis or sudden spike in demand, tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka help to meet our local demands. Presently, the excess arrival of tomato from Semmedu, Kinathukadavu, Thondamuthur, Nachipalayam, Alandurai to wholesale markets in Coimbatore has led to sharp fall in prices.
Analysing the past 12 years prices of tomato that prevailed in Oddanchathiram, Trichy and Coimbatore Uzhavar markets during the same period, it is predicted that the farm gate price of good quality tomato during harvest would be around Rs.18-20 per kg.
Brinjal
Similar is the situation for Brinjal which is majorly cultivated in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore. The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, TNAU has predicted the farmgate prices of good quality brinjal to be around Rs. 28-30 per kg.
Lady's Finger
In Tamil Nadu, major cultivation season for Lady's Finger is from February (Thai Pattam) and June to August (Adipattam). It is largely grown in Thalaivasal and Magudanchavadi blocks of Salem, Karamadai, Periyanayakkanpalayam and Thondamuthur blocks of Coimbatore, Andipatti block of Theni and Vaiyampattiblock of Trichy district.
Normally, Lady's Finger fetches maximum price during January-February months in a year. As per the trade sources, most of the vegetable arrivals to Coimbatore are from Hosur, Pollachi and Udumalpet. The price forecast for lady's finger would vary around Rs. 23-25 per kg respectively.
Hence, farmers are advised to take up sowing and selling decisions accordingly.
