Coimbatore: "On the auspicious day of Pongal, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has gifted 13 new varieties of crops to the farmers in the State", said TNAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. N. Kumar during Pongal celebrations held at the University campus, today.
Coimbatore: "On the auspicious day of Pongal, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has gifted 13 new varieties of crops to the farmers in the State", said TNAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. N. Kumar during Pongal celebrations held at the University campus, today.

The harvest festival and Mattu Pongal were celebrated with great fervour at the TNAU campus. The cattle raised in the University were fed with Pongal and sugarcane. As part of the ritual, the cows were made to step on the grains which is believed to be a mark of prosperity and high yield.

Cultural events were held for farm labourers and their families working in the cotton, paddy and horticulture sector. The spectators enjoyed competitions like rope pulling, Kabadi etc.

Vice-Chancellor, Kumar who distributed prizes to the winners, said, "Pongal, the harvest festival is not just for the peasants but for all people involved in agriculture."
He also noted a Canadian researcher who came here 65 years back, has come here with his family to enjoy pongal celebrations.
The VC apprised that 13 new varieties - 7 varieties of agriculture and 6 varieties of horticulture has been released by TNAU on the occassion of Pongal.
