Coimbatore: In India Maize is cultivated in nearly 93 lakh hectares with a production of 198.9 lakh tonnes, according to the First Advance Estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (2019-20).
In Tamil Nadu, Salem, Dindigul, Namakkal, Pudukottai, Tiruppur, Villupuram, Perambalur and Ariyalur are the leading districts producing maize.
TNAU has predicted that maize price will not rise in the upcoming season. "Favourable climatic conditions and extended monsoon has turned favorable for maize cultivation. Adequate precautionary measures has reduced the attack of 'Fall Army Worm' resulting in better crop growth and yield. Since the arrivals from Tamil Nadu have already started, the maize prices started declining and the prices will not increase further, if the supply is adequate", a release said.
The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, TNAU analyzed the past 19 years prices that prevailed in Udumalpet Regulated Market for maize. As per the analysis and market survey, the farm gate price of good quality maize during February to March 2020, will be Rs.1800 to 1900 per quintal. Hence, farmers are advised to take up appropriate marketing decision.
