Coimbatore: A three-day training programme on ‘Sensitization of quality biocontrol agents production’ is being organised by the Department of Plant Pathology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University with the support of Department of Horticulture and Plantation crops (TANHODA) Chennai.
Over 30 horticultural officers participated in the training programme, which was ianugurated on January 7, 2020 by Dr. K. Prabakar, Director, Centre for Plant Protection Studies.
Addressing the participants, Dr. k. Prabhakar explained on insecticide residues and its hazardous effects on humans. He stressed that under any circumstances, the quality of bio-inputs should not be compensated.
Dr.M.Kalyanasundaram, Dean (Agriculture) threw light on the importance of widely used biocontrol input viz., Pseudomonas, Trichoderma and its active ingredients in the formulation. He also mentioned on the need to use information and communication tools to reach out to the farming community.

While addressing, the Dean, Horticulture Dr. L. Pugalendhi, insisted that soil is a living body and continuous usage of pesticides causes loss of fertility. To improve soil fertility, we have to encourage the usage of biocontrol agents, he opined.
The growth on biocontrol usage and research strength on biocontrol agents were highlighted by Dr.N. Sathaiah, Professor and Head (Agricultural Entomology). He also added the new biocontrol agents in the pipeline for plant disease management.
The practical manual on mass production of biological agents as a ready reckoner on production technology was also released.
Dr. G. Karthikeyan, Professor and Head welcomed the gathering and explained the objectives of the programme. The hands-on training sessions were conducted by Dr. V. Sendhilvel and Dr. A.Sudha, Assistant Professors.
