Coimbatore: Commending the initiative of the Nilgiris District Administration to transform the district into a ‘a total organic district’, Covenor of the Tamilnadu Toddy Movement, S. Nallasamy stated that more farmers should take up organic farming and set a role model for other districts to follow.

Addressing the Press in Ooty, on Saturday, he urged farmers in the Nilgiris District to adopt natural methods of farming like practiced in Sikkim. He cautioned that use of heavy chemical pesticides will diminish the nutrient value of the vegetable and fruits, thus resulting in multiple health problems.

He proposed that the government should provide good rates for organic produce and special subsidies to encourage  more farmers to take up organic farming.

Commenting on the soaring onion prices, he said, "Nowadays, onion is cultivated as a short term crop. Earlier, farmers were able to manage the price fluctuations but now the situation has changed. We are forced to import onions because of the price hike."

"All those who have recently stepped into politics be it actors or others, should associate with the TN Toddy Movement. The association will help them win", he professed.
