Importance of biopesticides for clean and green environment emphasised at TNAU training programme

Coimbatore: Elucidating on the need for biopesticides for retaining soil quality and transforming the environment much cleaner and greener, a three-day training programme on 'Mass production of biocontrol agents' was held at the Department of Plant Pathology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

Coimbatore: Elucidating on the need for biopesticides for retaining soil quality and transforming the environment much cleaner and greener, a three-day training programme on 'Mass production of biocontrol agents' was held at the Department of Plant Pathology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). 



Around 50 agricultural officers participated in the training which focussed on knowledge transfer and skill demonstrations on mass production of biopesticides. 

The programme was inaugurated by Dr.M.Jawaharlal, Director of Extension Education, Dr. K. Prabakar, Director, Centre for Plant Protection Studies and Dr. T .Raguchander, Dean, Students Welfare. 

Dr.M.Jawaharlal talked about the importance and applications of the biological control agents in pest and diseases management. He also mentioned on the function of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in each district for dissemination of the biopesticide technology and convergence with the Department of Agriculture.

Dr. K. Prabhakar stressed about the insecticide residues and hazards for human and soil health and the importance of biopesticide for clean and green environment. The growth on biocontrol usage and research strength on biocontrol agents were highlighted by Dr. T. Raguchander, Dean, Students Welfare. He also added the new biocontrol agents in pipeline for emerging new plant pathogens.

The Joint Director of Agriculture, Coimbatore R. Chitradevi, spoke about sustainable farming system and she opined that higher yield by minimizing the use of pesticide, will be sustained when bioagents were used for crop production and she also added that the management of Maize Fall Army Worm by adopting the IPM strategy. 

Dr. G. Karthikeyan, Professor and Head i/c welcomed the participants and Dr. M. Muthamilan, Professor explained the objectives of the programme. 



The hands on training sessions were conducted by Dr. V. Sedhilvel and Dr. A.Sudha of TNAU. The training was started with the isolation of bioagents, subculturing, media preparation, broth preparation and mixing of bioagents for field applications and finally with quality control aspects.
