Coimbatore: The TN-IAM project funded by the Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) analysed the past 10 years' prices of cultivars of Poovan, Karpooravalli and Nendhran banana of Coimbatore.

The result of the analysis and trader survey indicated that the expected average farm gate price would be Rs. 12-14 per kg for Poovan, Rs. 15-18 for Karpuravalli and Rs. 25-27 per kg of Nendran respectively in the Coimbatore market, during December 2019.

According to the First Advance Estimates of National Horticulture Board (2018 -2019), the area under banana is 8.74 lakh hectares with a production of 300.06 lakh tonnes. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra are the major banana-growing states. Major banana-growing districts of Tamil Nadu are Coimbatore, Theni, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari.

Market arrivals of Poovan banana usually arrive at the Coimbatore market from Pudukottai, Thirukattupalli and Cuddalore. Karpuravalli arrivals are from Sathyamangalam, Gobichetipalayam and Mettupalayam. Nendran arrivals are from Mettupalayam and Kerala.

The recent trends in the prices of banana are influenced by key factors like the occurrence of monsoons, festivals and cyclone impacts. Further, banana prices are expected to fluctuate due to the new area under cultivation and also the emergence of new markets in recent years.
