Coimbatore: The Department of Agronomy, Directorate of Crop Management organized a massive tree planting programme at the Eastern Block Farm under the establishment of Agroforestry Phase-I on September 25.
Coimbatore: The Department of Agronomy, Directorate of Crop Management organized a massive tree planting programme at the Eastern Block Farm under the establishment of Agroforestry Phase-I on September 25.
Prof. Dr. N Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU presided over the event. Dr. K K Krishnamurthi, Chairman and Managing Trustee, Krishnamurthi International Agricultural Development Foundation (KIADEF) inaugurated the tree planting event and Dr P Subbian, Former Registrar, TNAU was also present.

As part of the initiative, 300 tree saplings comprising of Red Sandalwood, African Mahogany, Kadamba, Santhanavembu and Velvagai varieties were planted. The fodder grass Co (BN) 5 was planted as intercrops. Automated sub-surface drip system to irrigate the trees and fodder crop was installed. The crops will be irrigated using the treated sewage water collected from the student’s hostel and residential quarters of the University campus.
During the inaugural function, the University officers, Professors and various Heads of Departments, staff and students planted trees. Dr. V Geethalakshmi, Director (Crop Management) welcomed the gathering. Dr. C R Chinnamuthu, Professor and Head, Department of Agronomy detailed the purpose of establishing the Agroforestry and effective utilization of treated sewage water, and also thanked the gethering.
Dr. N Sakthivel, Associate Professor (Farms), Dr. N Thavaprakaash, Associate Professor (Agronomy), Dr. Karthikeyan, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) and Dr. S K Natarajan, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) organized the tree planting event.
