Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) released the price forecast for adipattam Vegetable Crops like tomato, brinjal and lady's finger.
According to the First Advance Estimate of the National Horticulture Board (2018-19), the area under tomato cultivation is 8.14 lakh hectares with a production of 205.15 lakh tonnes. The major tomato-growing states are Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha and West Bengal.
Tamil Nadu contributes less than five percent share of the total tomato area and production in India. In Tamil Nadu, the major tomato-producing districts are Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruppur, Theni and Dindugul. Tomato is being grown across Tamil Nadu during all seasons though adipattam is the preferred season for tomato cultivation.
Fresh arrivals at the Coimbatore market are from Udumalpet, Aalandurai, Pollachi and Kinathukadavu. Likewise, arrivals from Karnataka have commenced from July 2019 and will continue till the end of August 2019.
According to the First Advance Estimates of the National Horticultural Board (2018-19), the area and production of brinjal in India are expected to be around 7.35 lakh hectares and 129.87 lakh tonnes respectively. West Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh are the major brinjal-producing states of the country.
Brinjal is grown in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts in Tamil Nadu. As per trade sources, current arrivals are coming from Pollachi, Nachipalayam and Thondamuthur.
According to the First Advance Estimate of the National Horticulture Board (2018-19), the area under lady's finger or bhindi cultivation is 5.11 lakh hectares with a production of 62.19 lakh tonnes during 2018-19. West Bengal, Gujarat, Bihar, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh are major bhindi-producing states of the country.
The major bhindi-cultivating districts in Tamil Nadu are Salem, Theni, Dharmapuri, Thiruvallur, Coimbatore and Madurai. As per the trade sources, most of the bhindi arrivals at the Coimbatore market are from Nachipalayam, Pollachi, Udumalpet and Ottanchathiram.
The TN-IAM Project funded by the Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed the prices of tomato, brinjal and bhindi for the past 12 years in Oddanchathiram, Trichy and Coimbatore Uzhavar shandies.
As per the results of the analysis, the price of good quality tomato during harvest is expected to be about Rs.18-20 per kg, good quality brinjal at about Rs.28-31 per kg and good quality bhindi at about Rs. 20-22 per kg. Hence, farmers are advised to make sowing decisions accordingly.
