TNAU marks World Environment Day by hosting program to 'Beat Air Pollution'

Coimbatore : Celebrating World Environment Day and as a part of environmental protection, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's (TNAU), Department of Environmental Sciences hosted a program on the theme 'Beat Air Pollution' at the TNAU campus in the city, on June 6 and 7.

Coimbatore : Celebrating World Environment Day and as a part of environmental protection, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's (TNAU), Department of Environmental Sciences hosted a program on the theme 'Beat Air Pollution' at the TNAU campus in the city, on June 6 and 7. 

As a part of the program, Dr. N Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU inaugurated the improved TNAU sewage treatment plant to control water scarcity through eco-friendly utilization of treated sewage water in the TNAU main campus. The Vice-Chancellor, University officers, staff and students of TNAU planted tree seedlings and flowering plants as part of the program. 



Murugan and his staff from NIzhal Mayyam, an NGO, participated in this program and supplied tree seedlings free of cost. An environment rally to create awareness on the impact of air pollution among the public was also organized today which was flagged off by the Registrar and Dean (Agriculture), TNAU. The rally covered a distance of 2 kms, starting from the Department of Crop Physiology and culminating at the Department of Environmental Sciences, covering A A Scheme road and Marudhamalai road.

Over 350 students and 50 University staff participated in the rally wearing masks and carrying placards with slogans on protecting the environment from air pollution. ITC-WOW an NGO of ITC, Thekkampatty also participated in the rally and provided caps to the participants.



A training program on 'Safe and judicious use of pesticides' was also jointly organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences, TNAU, today. Dr. R Santhi, Director (DNRM) welcomed the gathering while Dr. A S Krishnamoorthy, Registrar delivered felicitated the gathering. About 110 participants comprising of students and staff of the Directorate of Natural Resource Management were trained on the safe and judicial use of pesticides by Dr. A Bharani Deepan, Corteva Agriscience.
