TNAU hosts NSS Special Camp 2019

Coimbatore: The dynamic NSS volunteers of 122 boys and 250 girls of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) Coimbatore organized the NSS Special Camp 2019, with the highlights being the 'Blood Donation' and "Free Eye Check-up' camps.

Coimbatore: The dynamic NSS volunteers of 122 boys and 250 girls of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) Coimbatore organized the NSS Special Camp 2019, with the highlights being the 'Blood Donation' and "Free Eye Check-up' camps.

The Rotary Club ably supported by Tulasi pharmacy helped support the camp. Dr. T K Ganesan, along with five staff members graced the camp. About 24 NSS volunteers donate their blood after a complete health check-up. The eye check-up camp was conducted by Dr. Fredrick, Dr. Roshini and Dr. Sakthi (Vasan Eye Care). An introductory speech was rendered highlighting eye-related problems to create awareness among villagers. The master eye check-up camp benefited nearly 50 people.

In continuation at the camp, a guest lecture was delivered on mushroom cultivation by Dr. K Thirubuvanamala, Associate Professor (Plant Pathology), TNAU, Coimbatore. She elucidated the method of mushroom cultivation effectively by a live demonstration which included the means and ways by which it can be cultivated and converted into a profitable business. Members of the locality found it extremely informative. 

Keeping in mind the saying on Parthenium, "One year of seeding leads to seven years of weeding," feisty NSS volunteers participated in a rally at about 6 pm at Thottipalyam to drive home the need to remove the noxious weed Parthenium. They also educated the farmers and villagers about the yield loss due to parthenium and the health hazards like skin allergy and asthma that it causes. Pamphlets were also distributed among the villagers. 

The NSS volunteers also organized a Road Safety Awareness Program at Samanaikkanpalayam which was conducted by Vinayagamoorthy, a road safety trainer with the Coimbatore city traffic department who stressed the importance of 'Road and Safety Protocol' in our daily lives. He amused the crowd with his entertaining games which also served to impart knowledge on road safety.

Dr K Guru Meenakshi, Assistant Professor, Post Harvest Technology Centre, TNAU, Coimbatore shared her knowledge about the value addition of fruits and vegetables. She emphasized the importance of tropical fruits and their value addition and stressed the importance of dietary nutrition while discerning the health condition of children who attended the program. She also educated the crowd on chemicals used in ripening fruits and the impact of junk food consumption.

A rally on 'Environment Conservation and Abolition of Plastic Usage' at Samanaikkanpalayam was also organised. It was followed by a program on 'Demonstration on Soil and Water Sampling' by Dr M Gopalakrishnan, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, TNAU, Coimbatore. Later, Malarmangai, a NSS trainer from Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore addressed the NSS volunteers, reiterating the privilege of being a NSS volunteer. She lauded the National Service Scheme as a tool for ensuring personality development among the youth through community service.
