Keeping in mind the saying on Parthenium, "One year of seeding leads to seven years of weeding," feisty NSS volunteers participated in a rally at about 6 pm at Thottipalyam to drive home the need to remove the noxious weed Parthenium. They also educated the farmers and villagers about the yield loss due to parthenium and the health hazards like skin allergy and asthma that it causes. Pamphlets were also distributed among the villagers.
The NSS volunteers also organized a Road Safety Awareness Program at Samanaikkanpalayam which was conducted by Vinayagamoorthy, a road safety trainer with the Coimbatore city traffic department who stressed the importance of 'Road and Safety Protocol' in our daily lives. He amused the crowd with his entertaining games which also served to impart knowledge on road safety.
Dr K Guru Meenakshi, Assistant Professor, Post Harvest Technology Centre, TNAU, Coimbatore shared her knowledge about the value addition of fruits and vegetables. She emphasized the importance of tropical fruits and their value addition and stressed the importance of dietary nutrition while discerning the health condition of children who attended the program. She also educated the crowd on chemicals used in ripening fruits and the impact of junk food consumption.
A rally on 'Environment Conservation and Abolition of Plastic Usage' at Samanaikkanpalayam was also organised. It was followed by a program on 'Demonstration on Soil and Water Sampling' by Dr M Gopalakrishnan, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, TNAU, Coimbatore. Later, Malarmangai, a NSS trainer from Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore addressed the NSS volunteers, reiterating the privilege of being a NSS volunteer.
