Coimbatore : With summer around the corner, it has become imperative for farmers to know the measures to be carried out to control 'thrip attacks' on grapes. Grape varieties are cultivated in large numbers in Theni, Dindigul, Coimbatore and Dharmapuri.

In Coimbatore, a variety of grapes including Panneer and black grapes are largely cultivated in areas surrounding Thondamuthur region including Theethipalayam, Madampatti and Karadimadai. Meanwhile, these grape crops are being subjected to 'thrip attack' which affects the total yield, eventually resulting in the decline of grapes prices in the market.

Sridaran, Professor of Department of Entomology, opines, "TNAU has explained on the measures to control thrip attack on grapes because of which rashes are found in the leaves and stems of grapes, leading to the decline in the market rate of grapes. Thrip attack usually occurs at the time of high moisture in the air and in drought times. Rashes usually occur when the juice present in the tissues of these grapes were absorbed due to which there is a higher possibility for micro germs to attack the fruits.

Hence, it is necessary to preserve good insects which will witness an increase if chemical fertilizers are avoided. Fertilizers rich in coal can be used by reducing nitrogen. Thrip attack can also be reduced if surplus water is given to the crops. Medicines rich in neem oil and neem seeds can be sprayed to prevent the spreading of thrip attack," he added.
