Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has announced that the price of onions will remain the same since the onion yield has been steady in spite of less rainfall in Karnataka.
A TNAU release states, "Small onion is predominantly cultivated in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In Tamil Nadu, it is largely cultivated in Dindigul, Tirupur, Trichy, Theni and Madurai with Tamil Nadu holding 85 percent of the total productivity of small onions in the nation. Small onions cultivated here are largely exported to Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.
There is a huge inflow of onions from Namakkal, Godi and Sathyamangalam to Coimbatore markets, whereas the inflow of the onion produce from Mysore will continue till March 19. The decline in rainfall in Karnataka has not had any adverse impact on the onion yield. The price forecast scheme functioning at the Agriculture and Rural Development Centre of TNAU has created a price assessment report of small onions, taking into account the price of onions for the past 15 years in the Dindigul market.
"As per the report, the farm price of high quality small onion is speculated at Rs.25-27 per kg. Based on this price assessment, farmers can plan on cultivation," noted the statement.
